Director's Journal
A director's insight on the elements of filmmaking and his experiences on the set of One Hand Clapping.Director’s Journal
The “Bird” Flies High
For me this is probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to write. Yes, we go through life and experience all the ups and downs, and of course all those things that go sideways, but we rarely have enough time to reflect upon what it all means.
From Director To Editor
So far, to review my last few blog entries, I have gone from writer to screenwriter, then to producer and then to director.
From Producer To Director
This seemed a bit far out to me at the time. I had fallen into producing because I had no other choice. Is that how I was going to fall into directing? Hell, that required a totally different skillset. One I wasn’t sure I was prepared for. So, I decided to push my boundaries and to find out.
From Screenwriter To Producer
At a certain age with no real screenwriting credits, the phones quit ringing and then, what’s a person to do? Yes, the repetitive lesson I learned over the years, is that for the most part, writers have no power in the film industry.
From Writer To Screenwriter
It seems like I have been writing for as long as I can remember. Early on it was just very short stories, when I was in junior high. Then I moved onto poetry in high school. It wasn’t until I reached college that I ventured into more serious writings of short stories, essays about whatever I felt like writing about, and more involved poetry. I was even lucky enough to get some pieces published.
Fact and/or Fiction
Now that I have settled into this long phase of post-production for ‘One Hand Clapping,’ I have had some time to reflect on what I am attempting to create here …. until a somewhat unexpected event recently occurred in my life.
Post Production Journal
Heading into post always seems a bit overwhelming to me, to say the least. Our work really is just beginning, since obviously this is the longest phase of the process.
Production Journal: Day 23
Here we are finally … at the end … on the beach!
Production Journal: Days 21 & 22
Here we are, the last few days of production, returning to Lockhart, Two Wishes Ranch, and then St Elmo’s Soundstage in Austin.
Production Journal: Days 19 & 20
We head back to Lockhart to finish a short week (four days). The next couple days are night shots (all night runs) and then we take our two days off to then finish our final three days of the shoot. The pressure is on to make sure we get everything we need.
Production Journal: Days 17 & 18
Starting a new week and we are getting set up to head for that final stretch. The troops are rested up and ready to get started again. We start a two-day stretch at Seton Shoal Creek in Austin, an assisted living facility. These two days are those types of days where you go, “Huh, really? That’s what happened? No, not really? … Hhhmm, really?”
Production Journal: Days 15 & 16
We have left the Ward house for good now, but we are still in Austin. In fact, for some hospital shots; a fairly simple exterior shot (so we think) and a fairly complicated interior one, plus a new baby’s entrance. And then we are off to Lockhart for some car shots.
